The robots and robotic devices currently deployed in UK care settings are almost entirely in one category: companion and communication devices. These are screen-based units, or small stationary robots, that can hold conversations, support video calls with family members, deliver reminders about medication or meals, and provide entertainment and engagement. Some are designed specifically for people living with dementia, providing a source of calm, non-verbal interaction. These devices do not perform physical care. They do not wash, dress, or move residents. They do not administer medication. They do not respond to a fall or a medical emergency. Full ambulatory humanoid robots, of the kind shown in technology company demonstrations and news coverage, are not currently deployed in UK care homes at any meaningful scale. In this context, it is natural for care providers to look at any technology that might help manage demand. It is equally natural for care workers to feel anxious about whether their jobs are at risk, and for families to wonder whether their relative's care is being handed over to a machine.

The workforce crisis is real. The technology response to it is so far extremely limited. The devices that exist today address a narrow slice of the problem, specifically the social isolation and communication needs of residents, not the physical care and clinical support needs that make up the majority of a carer's working day. The gap between workforce need and what robotic technology can currently fill is wide.


Where Robots Genuinely Help

Setting aside the displacement question, there are areas where robotic and companion technology provides genuine benefit in care settings, used appropriately.

Social isolation

Loneliness and social isolation are significant problems for older people in care. A resident who may spend long periods without meaningful human contact can, in some cases, benefit from a companion device that provides conversation, entertainment, or a way to connect with family. For residents with dementia in particular, therapeutic companion robots have a body of research evidence showing reductions in agitation and improvements in engagement. This is a real and meaningful contribution, distinct from and not a substitute for the human relationship between a carer and a resident.

Family connection

Companion devices that simplify video calling can make a real difference for residents who struggle with smartphones or tablets. A device that a resident with limited dexterity or mild cognitive impairment can use independently to speak with family reduces isolation and reduces the burden on care staff to facilitate each call. This is a clear example of technology genuinely supplementing human care.

Reminders and routine support

Devices that deliver medication reminders, activity prompts, or morning and evening routines can support residents who benefit from structure, particularly those living with early-stage dementia. These are low-stakes uses of the technology that add value without displacing skilled care work.

The honest boundary

None of the above replaces a carer. A carer's job involves physical care, emotional support, clinical observation, safeguarding judgement, and the skilled reading of a resident's changing condition. Technology company announcements and media coverage of humanoid robots frequently get ahead of what is deployable, safe, and appropriate in a care setting. When a family reads a headline about humanoid robots entering care homes, they may reasonably fear that their relative's carer is about to be replaced by a machine. That fear is currently unfounded for the vast majority of UK care settings.
